Carers Voice 5th January 2016

Carers’ Voice Somerset was formed "To ensure that carer services in Somerset are good and effective". They are keen to gather the thoughts of unpaid carers throughout Somerset to work out what is working and what isn't for them. They are holding a number of meetings throughout 2016...Click the red 'Carers Voice' text above to find out more.

Are you a Carer?

Are you someone who spends a significant proportion of your life providing unpaid support to a relative, partner or friend who has serious physical and/or mental health issues?

If so then you are a Carer and we would be so pleased if you would like to get involved in improving the lives of unpaid Carers across Somerset by joining us on Carers’ Voice Somerset, whose purpose is to make sure that those who hold the purse strings commission services wisely.

Carers’ Voice Somerset is formed of carers, and some professionals, whose purpose is to influence decision makers to provide the best carer services possible – within the budget constraints.

We need to know and understand exactly what you and other carers really need. We also need to know what is working well, and what is not, and what else you might feel would help you. To ensure that carer services in Somerset are good and effective (fit for purpose) we need, first, to discover in general, what goes well for you and what does not.

Healthwatch Home Care Survey 30th July 2015

Transforming home care in Somerset

Healthwatch Somerset is conducting a survey during summer and autumn of 2015 to find out the views of anyone who receives home care, their informal carers, friends and family.

We will use this feedback to inform the recommissioning of home care by the Local Authority in 2015/16.

Anything that is shared with us will make a difference for how the service works in future, so it’s really important for everyone to have their say!

Downs Syndrome Awareness Week 17-23 March 2014  17th March 2014

Downs Syndrome Awareness Week - Out of 1000 babies born one will have Down's Syndrome.  That's around 750 babies in the UK every year. It has been assumed that people with this condition cannot do many things that others can - but the truth is that given the opportunity they can live great lives.

DSi (Down Syndrome International) has coordinated World Down Syndrome Day since 2006.  However, on 10 November 2012 the United Nations adopted a resolution to designate 21 March as “World Down Syndrome Day”.  The aim of the day is to raise awareness and understanding of the condition which affects approximately 1 in 800 births worldwide.  The day is also about promoting the rights of those with Down's Syndrome to enable them to enjoy a full and active life in their communities.

In 2013 the theme for the awareness week was 'Visual Acuity - Think Big, Think Bold'.  The purpose of week was to focus on the impact poor visual acuity has on daily life.

Do you want to know how you can help too?   All you have to do is think up a fundraising idea and put it into action!   Why not organise your own sports day or quiz night?  Or if you have a talent use it.  For example, if you're good at art make some cool cards and sell them to raise funds for this cause?

Assistive Technology Focus Groups

Invite to a group for people with complex needs

Do designers really know what equipment will meet our needs both now and in the future?

We want to understand the needs of, and the challenges faced by disabled people, their carers, support workers and family members who use assistive technology.

Some people use the term ‘specialist equipment and aids’. This is the same as ‘assistive technology’. Assistive technology is anything that is designed to give disabled people more choice and control in their lives and enable them to join in activities and everyday life. It can be something very simple such as a moulded seat or something much more complex like an alphabet board or a voice synthesiser.

We are working with Nesta. Nesta is an innovation charity with a mission to help people and organisations bring great ideas to life. Nesta supports the best and brightest ideas by providing investments and grants and support to help new ideas develop so they have a positive impact on people.

Nesta is working with disabled people to develop a Challenge Prize to encourage innovation in the development of assistive technology so it works better for disabled people.

We are holding focus groups around the country to get the opinions of disabled

Exenatide   27th September 2013

Earlier this year a drug used to treat diabetes - Exenatide has been found to have the effect of slowing the progression of Parkinsons disease. So far it has only been trialled on a small number of people without the same number of people being trialled with a placebo treatment, but so far the signs are positive. Parkinsons UK are lobbying for a large scale trial to be carried out, but they claim that they are experiencing a few issues with bureaucracy. If you or the person you care for have Parkinsons, then keep an eye out for developments at the Parkinsons UK website...
