Free Training Opportunities For Carers

Compass Carers free training programme


Compass Carers has designed a number of courses to provide unpaid carers across Somerset with the skills and knowledge to help them manage their caring role.  They are being held at venues across the county and are open to anyone who is caring for a family member, friend or neighbour and is interested in gaining more information and build their confidence.  For more information about the courses available to support you in your caring role, please telephone Compass Carers on 01823 255911.

Transitions Training Session

 

Previously a Andrew Carrigan, a solicitor with Ashfords LLP, has attended Carers' Groups across Somerset to provide practical training on the subject of Lasting Powers of Attorney.

There will still be opportunities to attend the course on LPAs, but this year we are adding a new course called 'Transitions'.

 Transitions will focus on two main topics:

From 'Your Home' to 'A Home'


The issues to consider when care needs move beyond the level that can be met in your own home.

The seminars will be interactive and Andrew welcomes questions during and after the training.

They are starting in May at the Bruton Carers Support group, then will be held at other Carer Support Group meetings across the county in the coming year.

Everyday First Aid

 
This is a session delivered by the Red Cross which focuses on 'everyday first aid'. This includes dealing with an emergency, seizures, mild burns, cuts, broken bones, choking, heart attacks, strokes, and recognising a diabetic emergency. These sessions will be delivered through Carer Support Groups across the county.

First Aid for Carers

 
These modules are run by the Red Cross and focus on the type of first aid that carers might encounter.
 

Caring for those who have had a Heart Attack or Stroke

including: Heart Attack, Strokes, Bleeding, Unresponsibe Breathing & Unresponsive not Breathing

Date: 12th September 2017, 10am-12:30pm

Caring for those with Dementia & Parkinson's

Including: Burns, Bleeding, Head Injuries, Broken Bones, Choking & Unresponsive Breathing

Caring for an Older Person (Trips and Falls)

AGE UK - Computer Training Courses

Alzheimer's Society - CrISP Course

 

The CrISP 1 programme provides an opportunity to talk in a friendly and confidential environment about experiences of caring and supporting the person with dementia and the impact it is having. 

The workshops aim to provide carers with information and support. It will cover the following topics:

  • Understanding Dementia
  • Legal and money matters
  • Providing support and care
  • Coping day to day and next steps

St Margaret's Hospice, Taunton - Friends and Family Support Courses


Are you the carers or family members of St Margaret's patients, who can often feel unprepared for the challenges facing them. The course is designed to help carers feel more confident by means of talks, discussions and demonstrations.

The courses are run twice a year at St Margaret's in Taunton and are delivered over 6 sessions, covering topics such as;

- What can the hospice offer you as a carer?
- Lymphodema and looking after yourself
- Carer support in the home
- Hospital and hospice - What to expect
- Diet advice
- Safer Handling
 

The courses are being run throughout the Summer and Autumn of 2016 and you can choose which ones are relevant and convenient for you.

Diabetes Awareness Training 
this training session is focusing on the following topic areas:
  • your understanding of diabetes
  • potential treatment pathways
  • how to treat symptomatic patient, hyperglycaemia and hypoglycaemia
  • impact of other health conditions and your diet

Postural Management Passive Movement Training
this training session is focusing on the following topic areas:
  • Introduction to Postural Management and Passive Movement
  • Awareness of basic anatomy and physiology
  • Understanding the normal ranges of movement and causes of reduction in movement
  • Theory of passive movement
  • 24 hour postural Management
